Flippity – Allow your students to collaboratively work on making a set of flashcards by converting a Google Spreadsheet into a set of online flashcards.

Some great features: easily embed video, pictures, special fonts (superscript, subscript, font colors) into your flashcards!

Idea: You can easily print out your flashcard deck in an easy to read format. You might have students turn in this printout if you want to build this into an assignment.

Note: This is really simple to set up. I’ve included step-by-step instructions below (may seem like a lot of steps, but it’s only because I’ve outlined every button to press!), as well as some advanced tips.

Instructions (modified from Flippity.net):

Step 1: Modify the Google Spreadsheet Template

• Copy this template into your Google Apps account.
• You can delete everything EXCEPT FOR the “Slide1” and “Slide2” headers at the top (Slide1 column = front of flashcard; Slide2 column = back of flashcard)
• Enter as many terms as you want. Each new row is a new flashcard.
  • See advanced hints below for ability to embed video, pictures, super/subscripts, font changes, etc.
• Name your set of flashcards
  • Rename bottom tab

  • Rename document: File – > Rename

Step 2: Publish Your Spreadsheet and Get the Link

• File -> Publish to the Web…, then click “Start publishing”
• 
• Be sure that “Automatically republish when changes are made” is checked
• Copy the link under “Get a link to the published data”

Step 3: Get Your Flippity.net Link

• Paste the link you just copied in the box in Step 3 on Flippity.net
• To navigate through the cards: click on the card to flip it; click again to move to the next card

Step 4: Share / Print

• To make collaborative: Share the Google Spreadsheet (as you’d share any Google Doc)
• To Share Flashcards: Share the Flippity.net link

• Superscript: <SUP>enter_text_here</SUP>
  • example: Solve: x<SUP>2</SUP>+5x-6=0
• Subscript: <SUB>enter_text_here</SUB>
  • example: H<SUB>2</SUB>0
• Picture: find picture on the web, right click, choose “copy image URL“, paste into your google spreadsheet
• Youtube video: find the YouTube video, copy the “Share this video” link, paste into your google spreadsheet

• Move to next line: <BR>
