It was a huge honor for me to have the opportunity to spend the past 1 1/2 days at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education in Nashville, Tennessee for NAIS’ Summit on the Science of Learning and 21st Century Schools. This was an amazing opportunity to hear from thought-leaders across the county and engage in a discussion centered around advances in the science of learning and what it tells us about teaching, curricula, and schools. Of course, I can’t capture the experience in notes, but I did want to share as many notes as possible:
- Neuroscience and the Implications for Learning and Teaching (Mary Helen Immordino-Yang & Joanna Christodoulou)
- 21st Century Skills and Outcomes (Ken Kay & Charles Fadel)
- Teachers & Teaching (Teacher focus: Rick Hess & Joel Rose; Teaching focused: Jal Mehta & Carolyn Strom)
- Developing 21st Century Teachers and Schools (Teacher education: Marcy Singer-Gabella; Schools: John Katzman & Russ Whitehurst)
And if you don’t have time to read through all of the above, I’ll try to choose some highlights:

A huge thank you to NAIS for this opportunity to begin these conversations. I’m thankful to have connected with many leaders who I admire very much. Lots to think about as I head back home to close out what has been an exciting academic year full of so many incredible opportunities for me to learn and grow!
